Palm Harbor boasts a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. Originally named Bay St. Joseph, it changed to Yellow Bluff after a yellow fever epidemic, then to Sutherland.

Early settlers like J.C. Craver from Illinois arrived seeking a warmer climate due to health reasons and established farms and ranches in the area.

The town’s main industries were cattle and citrus, with the latter celebrated annually at the Palm Harbor Citrus Festival.

The arrival of the railroad brought tourism and development in Palm Harbor, including two hotels, with the larger one converted to Southern College in 1902.

In 1925, the name was officially changed to Palm Harbor.
