Brief history

The earliest inhabitants of the Safety Harbor area were the Tocobaga people in the 16th century. During that time, Spanish explorers like Panfilo de Narvaez and Hernando de Soto visited the area. De Soto named the springs found in the town “Espiritu Santo” (Holy Spirit) and believed he had discovered the Fountain of Youth. In the early 1900s, water from the springs was bottled and sold nationwide.

The area’s first permanent non-native settler was French nobleman Count Odet Philippe in the early 1800s. Philippe introduced the grapefruit to Florida.

The town was incorporated in 1917.

The historic Safety Harbor Resort and Spa opened in 1924, with the first section serving as a water dispensary. In 1926, the main part of the resort, known as the sanatorium, was opened.

Local legend attributes the name “Safety Harbor” to its shallow waters providing safety from pirates in the 1700s.

Today, Safety Harbor maintains its small-town charm while celebrating its rich history and artistic heritage.
